Magnetic
North has a number of projects under development, including:
After
Mary Rose
A new play by Debbie Jones, based on Mary
Rose by J.M.Barrie
Award-winning
playwright Debbie Jones (Brave New Roles award 2006, King's Cross
New Writing award 2003) is writing a new play based on Barrie's
Mary Rose. Described by Alison Lurie as “a
final and darker version of Peter Pan” Mary Rose
is a play about loss and grief written in the aftermath of the first
world war. Hitchcock tried to film it in the 1960s and
used to joke that it was the one film he was contractually forbidden
to make. The original is an extraordinary and moving play
that is rarely produced now because it is so entrenched in the conventions
of 1920s West End theatre. Magnetic North's version strips
away the outer layers to find the kernal and create a vibrant re-imagining
for the 21st century.
After
Mary Rose will be produced in late 2008/early 2009

The
Big Bang
A
new play by Linda McLean.
What
happens when certain elements and events are so placed that a particular
outcome becomes inevitable? The Big Bang centres around one moment
- an explosion in a hotel at midnight on New Year's Eve - and explores
the moment itself and the events that precede it.
The
play will explore space - the space between words and action, the
space between seeing and hearing and the space between one person's
beliefs and another's - and time - the elasticity of time at different
moments, sometimes accelerating wildly, sometimes almost stopping.
It will use the possibility that theatre offers to explore a single
moment or action from multiple viewpoints.
A
major development workshop for The Big Bang took place in
January 2006 in association with the National
Theatre of Scotland Workshop.
Wild
Child
A new play by Ronan O'Donnell that will look at the phenomenon of
feral children. Ronan developed this idea as part of Rough
Mix and is now under commission to write a full play.
