Magnetic North Theatre Company

Future Plans

Magnetic North has a number of projects under development, including:

Red Shift or Some Other Stars of the Heavens

A new play by Clare Duffy

Imagine you are standing on a street and you hear a siren. As the ambulance comes closer, the pitch of the siren seems to get higher, but as soon as it passes, the pitch drops away. This is caused by the Doppler Effect, which explains that sound seems to change depending on whether it is moving towards or away from you.

The same effect applies to light, where it is known as Red Shift – as light moves away from us it also appears to drop its pitch (or lengthen its wavelength) and becomes redder. Cosmologists used the effect to prove that the universe is expanding.

Red Shift is a play that uses this effect as a metaphor for human relationships – what if we could tell whether someone was moving towards us or away from us (or in love or out of love) by a physical manifestation?

After The Bells

A new play by Linda McLean

What happens when certain elements and events are so placed that a particular outcome becomes inevitable? The Big Bang centres around one moment - an explosion in a hotel at midnight on New Year's Eve - and explores the moment itself and the events that precede it.

The play will explore space - the space between words and action, the space between seeing and hearing and the space between one person's beliefs and another's - and time - the elasticity of time at different moments, sometimes accelerating wildly, sometimes almost stopping. It will use the possibility that theatre offers to explore a single moment or action from multiple viewpoints.

A major development workshop for After The Bells took place in 2006 in association with the National Theatre of Scotland Workshop.
